Nicholas Miles is a values-driven and accomplished economic planner and investment adviser with 30 years of experience formulating, implementing and evaluating economic development strategies and investment projects in over 30 countries. Dr. Miles has worked for a number of private sector companies, for national government and for development finance institutions including:
• The EU and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
• The Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank, the UN and GIZ
• UK central and local government (incl. RDAs, LAs, LEPs and DFID)
He has worked in Asia, Africa and in Central, Eastern and Western Europe devising economic development programmes and innovation strategies. He has brokered investment connections across countries, has undertaken economic visioning studies, and has been involved in facilitation and institutional strengthening exercises for regional and city governments.
He has recently completed assignments on the wider framework conditions for innovation in the UK; an evaluation of technology support programmes in the aerospace sector of the UK; and a science and technology strategy and implementation plan for Abu Dhabi. He was instrumental devising technology transfer and development funds and institutions in Kenya and Sri Lanka. During the 1990s he was one of seven members of the Governor’s Environment Committee (Hong Kong), and in 2009 he was an advisor to the UK Shadow Government on science and technology policy.
He holds BA and MA degrees from the universities of Durham (UK) and York (Toronto, Canada), and a PhD in Economic Geography from the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK).
